The Minister of Transport Tālis Linkaits met with the Minister of Transport and Communications of Finland Timo Harakka in an online conversation on Monday, 14 March 2022.
The Ministers of Latvia and Finland discussed the proposals of the European Union’s 'Fit for 55' package: Fuel EU Maritime.
T. Linkaits and T. Harakka also drew attention to the impact of the war started by Russia in Ukraine and the resulting sanctions against Russia and Belarus on the national transport and logistics sector. T. Linkaits informed his Finnish colleagues about the impact of geopolitical events on rail transport, port operations and aviation, land freight transport, acknowledging that the situation was challenging and not only Latvia, but also European countries in general would have to look for solutions to support the sectors.
Mr Harakka said that the Finnish transport sector was also feeling the effects of the war and sanctions on the economy, and acknowledged that emergency required emergency solutions.
