By supporting the citizens of Ukraine and their family members who have come to Latvia to flee the war caused by Russia, there is a decision made that they will be able to travel on regional public transport free of charge. The Saeima made the decision today, 10 March 2022, approving amendments to the Law on Support for Civilians of Ukraine.

Ukrainian citizens and their family members will be able to travel on regional public transport - trains and buses - free of charge on the presentation of an identity document. At the same time, the exemption from the fare does not apply to commercial regional bus routes (journeys) marked with the capital letter “K” in the timetables (this indication also appears on the electronic route sign of the bus on the front of the bus). In their turn, the municipalities determine the exemption from the fare in public transport of city municipalities.

Changes have also been made in commercial passenger transport by taxi and car transport, enabling Ukrainian citizens to register in the register of taxi drivers maintained by state-owned “Autotransporta direkcija” Ltd (Road Transport Administration). Citizens of Ukraine will not be required to have knowledge of the official language, nor will they be required to prove a driving disqualification, which is a requirement if the driving license is issued abroad.
