On February 20, 2020, the Minister of Transport of the Republic of Latvia Mr Talis Linkaits leads a transport delegation from the ministry to participate in the 3rd Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety in Stockholm, Sweden.
On the sidelines of the conference, the Deputy State Secretary of the Ministry of Transport of Latvia Mr Uldis Remainis participated in the first Latvia-Belarus-Sweden Transport ministries tri-lateral meeting, where he met with Mr Andrei Ivanov, the Vice-Minister Mr Andrei Ivanov, and the State Secretary to the Minister of Infrastructure of the Kingdom of Sweden Mr Mathias Landgren.
In the meeting, the parties discussed the cooperation prospects in the transport and logistics sectors between Latvia, Belarus and Sweden. Mr Reimanis stated that “Latvia, Belarus and Sweden share strong traditional economic relations, and there is a good opportunity to develop strategic cooperation between the three countries in the provision of integrated multimodal transport services and solutions in connecting freight flow between Asia and Europe.” The meeting was also attended by the Ambassador of the Republic of Latvia to the Kingdom of Sweden Mr Margers Krams.
At the conference, Mr U. Reimanis and Ms E. Luca, the Director of the Department for International Project Cooperation, met with the President of the International Road Federation (IRF) Mr B. Halkias. In the discussion, Mr U. Reimanis confirmed Latvia’s interest to reduce the number of fatalities in road transportation, to improve road safety and to learn the best practice from the world.”
IRF President B. Halkias introduced Latvian delegation to the IRF and extended an invitation for Latvia to join the IRF in the future and to work together to improve the road safety.
The Minister of Transport of Latvia, Mr Talis Linkaits participated in the International Transport Forum and received praises for Latvia’s active involvement in the international dialogue aimed at reducing the number of the fatalities on the roads.
Latvia supports the implementation of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which lays out the recommendation to accelerate action towards halving global road traffic deaths and injuries by 2030. The Ministry of Transport of Latvia is committed to improving road safety, making it one of the Ministry of Transport's top priorities.
